The book is completely self contained, housing everything from scenarios to answer to hints.

Murdle volume 1 is broken into four sections with each section increasing the difficulty of the experience, eventually requiring players to sort through suspects’ possible lies and deducing motive as well.

With 100 mystery logic puzzles contained within, Murdle volume 1 has enough to keep even the best detectives busy for hours.

OUR THOUGHTS:

Puzzles: A plethora of deductive puzzles with a few extra layers to keep them engaging and fun over the course of the entire book.

At first glance, Murdle reminds us of the old logic puzzles we used to do in elementary school.  They’re quick and easy to pick up, able to be played individually in the span of a few minutes or in longer spurts with multiple puzzles.

However, the puzzles don’t stay so elementary.  With each section of the book, the difficulty level rises.  Soon, players will need to not only work with hard facts, but will also need to pick through the potential lies of suspects.  Then, instead of only figuring out the who, what, and when of a case, they’ll have to logic out the criminal’s motives as well.  The additional aspects of difficulty build nicely and keep the book challenging and engaging over the course of 100 puzzles.

To add more variety and fun, some cases involve letter ciphers, while others might make use of clues based on exhibits given at the start of each section.  These exhibits include id badges, zodiac signs, maps, and more.  Murdle does a good job of keeping the focus on the deductive puzzles, while giving just a bit more to keep them feeling like more.

For anyone who feels stuck, the book includes a hint section.  The hints usually consist of one more hard fact.  Usually all it takes is one solid piece of evidence to make everything else fall in line pretty easily.

Once a player feels confidence in their answer, they can check the back of the book for the correct answer and a little story blurb.

These are puzzles that should be able to enjoyed across a large swatch of skill levels.

Narrative: A humorous romp that slowly builds out a world and story.

The Murdle narrative follows the misadventures of Detective Logico who encounters murder seemingly everywhere he goes. His cases are bookended with an introductory paragraph and a conclusion paragraph upon completion.  Everything is presented in light and humorous ways, with all the clues and evidence often coming with jokes and tongue in cheek remarks.

Each case can standalone but the narrative blurbs build on each other a bit to create a longer story with recurring characters and follow ups to previous cases.

Overall Fun: Light but addictive

In its simplicity of objective and structure, Murdle becomes a slightly addictive adventure.  Sure, a single puzzle can be completed at time, but one can become many with little effort. The puzzles are engaging and good mini brain workouts.

The drive to push forward is enhanced by the book’s humorous story and descriptions.  The lighthearted tale and tongue in cheek approach to its cases and character is charming.

WRAP UP:

Puzzles:  A plethora of deductive puzzles with a few extra layers to keep them engaging and fun over the course of the entire book.

Narrative:  A humorous romp that slowly builds out a world and story.

Overall Fun: Light but addictive fun

Recommended for:

Murdle volume 1’s ability to scale in difficulty makes it great for puzzle solvers of all skill levels, starting with easy deductive puzzles and scaling up to some pretty hard ones.  These are fantastic for those who want quick puzzles that can be picked up at any time for a few minutes, but are still good for longer sittings too.
